    The Umatilla Basin project was initiated in the late s to restore a spr ing chinook r un to a river that had been devoid of salmon for nearly seventy years.   Two of these projects had been begun by the Umatilla project in Umatilla county, to irrig acres with water diverted from the Umatilla river by a dam (98 ft. high, ft. long) 2 m. above Echo, with a reservoir of acres, was authorized in and was 85½% finished in ; the Klamath project, to irrigate , acres.
